The Mighty and Graceful Mount Kilimanjaro

You can have the one-of-a-kind experience of standing atop the world’s tallest free-standing mountain by participating in a Kilimanjaro Trek. Out of the three volcanic cones, the inactive Kibo (19,341 ft.) has the widest crater, known as the Reusch Crater, at its summit. The volcanic Ash Pit, which is 1,150 feet deep inside the crater, can be seen by walking to the crater from the trek’s highest point, Uhuru Peak.

We’ve composed a route that you can follow for Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

The 9-Day Machame Route

Beginning at Machame Gate is the Machame Route, sometimes known as the “Whiskey” route. It is situated in the lush, abounding rainforest at the southern mountain’s base.

You ascend to the Shira Plateau, then descend the mountain beneath the Southern Icefield of Kilimanjaro before ascending to the summit from Barafu Hut.

Because it offers an extra day for acclimation and cuts down some of the daily walks, the nine-day Machame route is encouraged. Seven days are spent on the mountain in total.

The trip starts and ends at the Moshi lodge in Tanzania.

Day-Wise Breakdown of the Machame Route

Day 1

The day before your hike, try to get to your Moshi lodging establishment by 3 PM. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) airport pick-up to your resort can be arranged in advance, or you can take a cab to get there on your own. The drive is around 45 minutes.

You will assemble in the late afternoon for an equipment check and pre-climb briefing. Also, make sure you have the required health coverage and travel insurance.

Day 2

You start your trip through a lovely and thick forest after completing the required registration procedures at the Machame National Park gate (5,400 ft.). You’ll stop along the way for a quick lunch. And, pitch a tent at Machame Camp (9,800 ft.).

The duration is 5-6 hours (6.7 miles), and the Elevation will be +4,400 ft.

Day 3

The forest will soon be behind you as you move into the area of huge heather-covered grassland. The Shira Plateau is visible from a distance as the trail gradually ascends through steep slopes (11,000 ft.).

  • From the camp next to Shira Hut (12,600 ft.), you can see Mt. Meru floating amid the clouds, which is an incredible sight.

The duration is 4-5 hours (3.3 miles), and the Elevation will be +2,800 ft.

Day 4

After a morning of steady ascent and spectacular scenery along the way. You’ll stop for lunch close to Lava Tower (15,150 ft.).

  • After that, the trail drops to the Barranco Valley’s floor (12,800 feet), where you can camp at the magnificent Barranco Camp. It offers expansive views of the plains below and is protected by towering rocks.

The duration is 7-9 hours (7.5 miles), and the Elevation will be +200 ft.

Day 5

You can access an uneven trail on Kibo’s southern edge, which offers incredible views of the Southern Snowfields, by ascending the Barranco Wall, which is quite steep.

  • The final water source before reaching the summit, Karanga Camp (13,100 ft.), is only a short distance away. The terrain transforms to rocks then, with pockets of rich greenery in protected caves.

The duration is 4-6 hours (3.2 miles), and the Elevation will be +300 ft.

Day 6

To get to Barafu Hut (14,800 ft.), where lunch will be served, you’ll continue a straightforward trail over compacted rocks with expansive views. At the bottom of the southeast valley, there is a quick ascent to the plateau for acclimatisation (15,700 ft.).

Resting up for the final ascent in the morning takes up the rest of the day.

The duration is 3-5 hours (3.4 miles), and the Elevation will be +1,700 ft.

Day 7

To reach the crater edge by sunrise, you will begin your ascent by headlamp at around one in the morning. With some well-graded zigzags and a hard ascent over loose volcanic rocks, it will take about five or six hours to reach Stella Point (18,800 ft.).

  • You’ll take a quick nap there while watching the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still in good shape can travel to Uhuru Peak in two hours roundtrip from here around the crater rim (19,341 ft.). The breathtaking glaciers and ice cliffs that still cover the majority of the summit area will be visible as they pass by.
  • Following some refreshments, you’ll continue to descend to reach the final campsite, Millenium Camp, which is reached surprisingly quickly after the drop to Barafu (12,500 ft.).

The duration is 11-15 hours (8.2 miles), and the Elevation will be +4,500 ft. gained and -6,800 ft. lost.

Day 8

You will pass through a wonderful tropical forest that is alive with birds singing and boasts lush vegetation after a sustained descent on a well-built trail.

  • After passing past coffee and banana farms and Mweka village, the road descends to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate at Mweka (5,400 feet). You’ll be taken from here to your Moshi accommodation.

The duration is 4-6 hours (7.6 miles), and the Elevation will be -7,000 ft.

Day 9

To reach Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) after breakfast, you can hire a private transfer or a cab.

The drive will be around 45 minutes.
